Job’s Praise To God

Job stood up and tore his robe in grief. Then he shaved his head and fell to the ground to worship. He said,

“I came naked from my mother’s womb,

and I will be naked when I leave.

The LORD gave me what I had,

and the LORD has taken it away.

Praise the name of the LORD!”

In all of this, Job did not sin by blaming God.

Job 1:20-22

Job had lost everything—all his animals, his servants, and even all his children. Yet, in the midst of such tragedy, Job realized everything he had was from God. Even his children were gifts from God, and so there was still reason to “praise the name of the Lord.”

The tragedies of this life are not lessened by our hope in God. Losses still hurt. Our bond with Job’s suffering is simply the bond of a shared humanity. What is amazing, however, is that God allowed his Son to come to this earth to suffer. God not only gives us everything we have, he gives us his Son to redeem us from our sins. Praise the name of the Lord!
