Gratitude For God’s Care

When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—

the moon and the stars you set in place—

what are mere mortals that you should think about them,

human beings that you should care for them?

Yet you made them only a little lower than God

and crowned them with glory and honor. . . .

O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!

Psalm 8:3-5, 9

After pondering the beauty and immensity of just one aspect of God’s creation—the stars in the heavens—David was moved to say, “What are mere mortals that you should think about them?” We are mere specks in the vast universe in which we live. Yet the marvel is that God made us only a little lower than himself! He granted us great honor—by first creating us as the pinnacle of all other life on this earth and later, when we had sinned, by sending his own Son to save us.

When we are moved by the majesty or intricacy of something God has created in the physical world, we should remind ourselves that the God who created this amazing world has showered his infinite love on us. In prayer, express your wonder and gratitude to God today.
