Entering The Lord’s Presence

Who may worship in your sanctuary, LORD?

Who may enter your presence on your holy hill?

Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right,

speaking the truth from sincere hearts.

Those who refuse to gossip

or harm their neighbors

or speak evil of their friends.

Those who despise flagrant sinners,

and honor the faithful followers of the LORD,

and keep their promises even when it hurts.

Those who lend money without charging interest,

and who cannot be bribed to lie about the innocent.

Such people will stand firm forever.

Psalm 15:1-5

Periodically, the people of Israel “went up” to the Temple in Jerusalem for feasts and celebrated God’s saving acts on their behalf. In this prayer, David meditated on what characteristics should mark those who worship before the Lord at the Temple. Such people should be “blameless”—truthful, kind, generous, and loving.

Many church services include a time of confession in their worship services so that worshippers can prepare their hearts properly. As you enter God’s presence for your own time of worship and prayer, ask the Lord to cleanse your life.
