Why Monday Matters To God

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.

LET’S FACE IT. The average Christian working man doesn’t get a paycheck from a Christian ministry, hasn’t been to seminary, and is plying his trade in the secular marketplace. What’s also probably true is that he often feels as if what he’s doing is somehow less important than what happens on Sunday at church. Sometimes, Christian working men feel as if their Monday–to-Friday work is unimportant to God. But this is simply not true.

The Bible obliterates the false divide between secular and sacred work. Genesis essentially tells us that God was the first boss, giving Adam an assignment and a calling even before the Fall. Therefore, our work is not simply a means to make money and provide for our families. Nor do we go to work simply to be evangelists or to have a means to give money to the church. The work itself matters to God. To quote nineteenth-century Dutch theologian Abraham Kuyper, “There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry: ‘Mine!’”

Because the work itself matters to God, we should give our best to whatever vocation God has called us to. The sanctuary at church is not the only place where He exists. Your workplace is also His domain. And if you’re currently looking for work, He is with you in that place, too. You will probably need to remind yourself of this truth over and over again.

BOTTOM LINE

Your work really does matter to God, and it matters to your neighbor, too. Rejoice in that, and do your best for the glory of God.
