Why Am I Here?

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

Ephesians 2:10

“IF YOU LOVE WHAT YOU DO, you don’t work a day in your life.” How many of us have heard this before? We long for that kind of life congruency and fulfillment of purpose. And yet why is it that so many men hate their jobs? Why are so many in careers that seem to be a poor match for their gifting? Why are so many men who are out of work—and who want to work—unable to find a job at all?

To be sure, many men work hard to support their families, and we should (1 Timothy 5:8). And there may be seasons of life in which we are called to perform jobs we don’t enjoy that help grow our character and advance God’s Kingdom purposes in our families and ministries. Even so, every man should pursue the unique calling for which God has placed him on the earth—the work he is passionate about. But how?

Author Frederick Buechner writes, “The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” Discovering our God-given purpose involves asking several questions: What are my unique gifts and talents? What activities bring me joy? What need do I feel called to meet?

These are questions every man should ask God to reveal. Ephesians 2:10 tells us that the gospel launches us into a life of purpose. Each one of us has a personal mission designed for us by our heavenly Father. We were created to joyfully pursue it.
