What’s Next?

For the LORD God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The LORD will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right.

Psalm 84:11

EVERY MAN HAS A special interest in something. For some, it’s sports—be it baseball, football, hockey, or NASCAR. Other men hunt and fish. It might be a particular book that’s a real page-turner, or maybe it’s something as simple as a night out with your wife or quiet time at home with the family.

One of the most fun things in life is to be looking forward to something. There’s a keen sense of anticipation that for a lot of folks is like being a kid at Christmas again. For the briefest of moments, such eager expectation can be a great escape from the everyday pressures of living in today’s busy world, which is filled with responsibilities and stress.

As enjoyable as our interests may be, however, they pale in comparison to our ultimate hope in Jesus Christ. A day is coming when we will stand face-to-face with Him, free from the trials and pains of this world. No more sleepless nights, sickness, or suffering. No more regret or longing.

Let that soak in for a few moments. Our hobbies are fun, yes, but in the end, they’re only temporary. A thousand years from now, it simply won’t matter how the Steelers did this year or how many home runs you hit in your church softball league. The hope of eternal life with Jesus puts everything in perspective. If we lose sight of that, we will try to get more out of our hobbies than they can provide.

BOTTOM LINE

Our interests can be a lot of fun, but the enjoyment we find in them will be nothing compared to the day we meet Jesus face-to-face. Put your hope in that.
