Moses again pleaded, “Lord, please! Send anyone else.”
Exodus 4:13
THE TWO INSTRUCTORS HAD a favor to ask of Rick. Recently, he had taken part in a class at the local YMCA to prepare to train for a 5K race. It was hard, but he achieved his goal of finishing in less than thirty minutes. Afterward, he knew the trainers were putting together another course—this one to prepare for a 10K.
What he wasn’t expecting was that they would ask him to help out as an instructor. Immediately, a thousand thoughts began racing through his mind, none of them very positive.
I’ve never done anything like this. I’m not an athlete. I’ve never done a 10K before. You couldn’t get anybody else to do it, right?
When it came down to it, Rick felt a little bit like Moses at the burning bush. No, he wasn’t being asked to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, but becoming a running coach was definitely outside his comfort zone. Like Moses, Rick felt uncertain of his own ability, and he thought the trainers were surely making a big mistake. There had to be someone else better suited for this assignment—right?
God knew exactly what Moses’ weaknesses were (as well as his strengths), and He called Moses anyway. Many times, accomplishing something for God takes a simple leap of faith. Forget about the reasons why you shouldn’t be able to do it, and concentrate on why you can.
(For the record, Rick helped lead the class, and it was a great experience.)
BOTTOM LINE
When you’re feeling unworthy of a particular assignment, look to God for guidance, courage, and help. He uses people who aren’t perfectly qualified and gives them the strength and direction they need.
