The Voice Of God

The voice of the LORD echoes above the sea. The God of glory thunders. The LORD thunders over the mighty sea. The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is majestic.

Psalm 29:3-4

IT’S THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY, and the sky overhead is black with storm clouds. The windows are soaked, and it feels as if the house has been submerged in the ocean. The trees are bending to the point of breaking. The lightning is so close you can almost feel it. Being in severe storms can be very unsettling. Just because we are indoors doesn’t always mean we are safe. In those moments, we are reminded of the power that nature holds.

In Psalm 29, the voice of the Lord is likened to a severe storm. Christians often use the analogy of a storm to describe trials in life, but in Psalm 29 the psalmist uses it to describe God. It’s easy to forget that God is so powerful He can create a world or destroy a kingdom with a word.

Though being in the midst of a severe storm can evoke a fearful response, in this psalm the response is worship. At the end of Psalm 29, the people of God are in the Temple crying “Glory!” Why? Because God is both glorious and good. He may not be “safe”—that is, predictable or manageable—but He is always good. In the aftermath of the storm, God brings peace and strength to those who trust in Him. We see Him come through for us, and we ascribe to Him the glory due His name. So while His glory can be a bit unsettling to us at times—just consider the vastness of the night sky on a clear night—it also leads us to worship.

BOTTOM LINE

The voice of God may not be “safe,” but it is good. The more you see how great God is, the more you will worship Him and trust Him.
