The Right Kind Of Confidence

Do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you!

Hebrews 10:35

THOUGH THERE’S A DANGER OF placing too much confidence in ourselves, this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be confident. The truth is, we have every right to be supremely confident in our position in Christ and in our future as secured by Him. In fact, to not be supremely confident is not humility; it is unbelief. It is to discount God’s promises and live at a level far beneath what He’s offered us. We often do that because we don’t feel worthy and God’s promises can sound too good to be true. But remember—this is Almighty God we’re talking about! He doesn’t offer stingy forgiveness or measly power or meager promises. He offers more than we could ever ask or think (Ephesians 3:20). We must take Him at His word and believe Him!

What are some things we can be confident about? Well, for starters, as Christians we are completely forgiven and accepted by God, both now and forever. Ephesians 3:12 says that “because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God’s presence.” Our sin is no longer a barrier between us. And this access, this relationship, will extend throughout eternity: “As we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world” (1 John 4:17).

We also have confidence in prayer: “We are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him” (1 John 5:14). God wants us to be confident in Him.

BOTTOM LINE

The right kind of confidence—confidence in God and His promises—is not arrogant. It takes humility to believe that what God says is true is true.
