Problem Area
Wise words bring approval, but fools are destroyed by their own words.
Ecclesiastes 10:12
MEN AND WOMEN ARE DIFFERENT. No shock there. Just looking in the mirror reveals that. But some differences are subtler than others. Studies show that women consistently speak more than twenty thousand words a day. Men, on the other hand, say fewer than ten thousand on average. How we communicate and what we talk about differs greatly between the sexes too.
Many women love to talk things out. The mere act of communicating makes them feel better. Most men don’t share that opinion. They tend to speak less and problem-solve more. University of Missouri professor Amanda J. Rose has studied this dynamic and says it can lead to difficulties in romantic relationships.
“Women may really push their partners to share pent-up worries and concerns because they hold expectations that talking makes people feel better,” Rose says, “but their partners may just not be interested.” You can see why it’s important to understand these differences in disposition and expectations.
As you communicate with the women in your life, try to be aware of their needs as well as your own comfort zone. Talking things through with your wife will help her feel more bonded to you. During times when you don’t feel like talking, be gentle and considerate as you explain your needs. By being gracious with your speech, you’ll avoid conflict and build a better relationship. Wise words are gracious.
BOTTOM LINE
Even when you don’t feel like talking, always speak kindly to your wife. Your gracious words will help prevent misunderstanding.
