Magnificent Obsession

Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness are blessed, for they will be filled.

RICK AND JASON WERE COMPLETELY STUMPED. They had come across a trivia question related to one of their favorite sports, and they couldn’t put their finger on the correct answer. They mulled it over, texted and e-mailed back and forth, called friends, checked newspaper accounts, and posted the question on Facebook.

The harder they tried, the longer it seemed to take to nail down a decisive answer. Just when they thought they had the problem licked, yet another theory would pop up to burst their bubble. Still, they kept trying and finally came up with the information they’d been so determined to find.

To what extent will you go to search out God, to find the peace and comfort that only He can provide? In Psalm 42:1, David is as eager to experience God’s presence as “the deer longs for streams of water.” In the next verse, David says, “I thirst for God, the living God.” This is no half-hearted pursuit of the Lord; it’s an all-out search.

We’re filled with all kinds of different passions, whether it’s our jobs, our hobbies, or something else. And we’ll often go to great lengths to get what we want. But for what? Some sort of temporary satisfaction? Apply that same kind of passionate drive to your walk with Christ, and the reward will truly be satisfying.

BOTTOM LINE

Allow God to be the focus of your obsession, rather than chasing after some trivial pursuit, possession, or accomplishment that will eventually fade away.
