You should imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.

1 Corinthians 11:1

THE APOSTLE PAUL would have fit well into today’s corporate structure. He could’ve written books on leadership, winning, perseverance, and vision. Paul’s motor had a different gear—he was compelled to preach the gospel (1 Corinthians 9:16). And he worked to lead churches and disciple younger believers such as Timothy.

The best leaders are also great followers. Though by all appearances Paul had a strong personality, he also could have written books on humility, submission, and service. When he first came to know Christ, he spent time being taught by Peter (Galatians 1:18). Above all else, Paul wanted to follow Christ (Philippians 3:10-14). It has often been said that the world has never seen one man completely sold out to Jesus—yet Paul came as close as anyone ever has.

Paul also knew when to get out of God’s way. He had great wisdom from the Lord and knew that he ultimately had to hide behind the Cross of Christ and let others see Jesus, not him. In his second letter to Timothy, he acknowledges that it was time for him to exit stage right (2 Timothy 4:6) and let another generation lead. Great followers are sensitive to God’s leading and know when it’s time to step aside. May God give you the strength to imitate Jesus and recognize His guidance in your life.

BOTTOM LINE

Find a leader to follow and a follower to lead. Above all, make sure that you’re following Jesus yourself and listening to His voice.
