Last Words

Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”

LAST WORDS ARE IMPORTANT. Whether it’s a parent saying good-bye to a child leaving for college, a husband being shipped overseas to war, or even a coach’s pregame speech before taking the field, last words are often crucial. They often represent something important, and sometimes they are even memorable.

Jesus’ words in Matthew 28:18-19 explain what His followers are to do in the long period between His first coming and His second coming. What Jesus said to His disciples—known as the great commission—would make a difference for all eternity. Those words, spoken on a Galilean hillside, have become the blueprint for His movement. What Jesus said to His disciples that day was certainly of great importance. He wanted them to focus on the mission, and to know that His power and presence would go with them.

Jesus has given us, His followers, the incredible responsibility to be His representatives in the world, to carry His message of love and peace to broken humanity. As we go about our business, we can do Jesus’ business by telling others about Him, pointing people to the Savior, and being salt and light in our world. His message becomes our message.

Amazingly, Jesus allows us to share in spreading His gospel. No higher calling or greater privilege exists.
