Justice And Mercy

Judge fairly, and show mercy and kindness to one another.

Zechariah 7:9

LAWS ARE NECESSARY TO maintain order in any society. They keep us safe from burglars and murderers and from those who would take away our rights. They keep our highways and our homes safe. Whether enforced by a law enforcement officer, a judge in the courtroom, or men and women in the jury box, a law that is broken is likely to bring consequences to the lawbreaker.

Laws require justice. Laws require that someone who breaks the law suffers fines, imprisonment, community service, or a revoked license. And we all want justice for the lawbreaker—right? Unless it’s us. Then we want mercy.

How do you balance justice and mercy in your life? When a friend betrays you, do you mete out “justice” by severing the friendship? When a client fails to pay his bill, do you immediately take him to court? When your wife lets you down in some way, do you immediately give up on your marriage?

When it comes to mercy, Jesus was the master teacher. He often taught by telling stories about people like the father in the parable of the Prodigal Son. Jesus also told His disciples they should forgive others “seventy times seven” (Matthew 18:22)—in other words, as many times as necessary. Prayerfully ask God to help you extend compassion and mercy wherever and to whomever it is needed.

BOTTOM LINE

Look back over recent months and see whether you can find a broken or wounded relationship in which you can reverse your path and demonstrate mercy.
