It’s Simple, But Not Easy

One day Jesus told his disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up.

Luke 18:1

IN LUKE 18:1-8, Jesus tells the parable of the persistent widow. A fitting summary might go something like this: “An unjust judge finally gives in to a lady’s annoying requests so that she’ll leave him alone and he can get on with his life.” It may not be a lovely story, but it’s effective. Jesus tells us that if a man like this unjust judge, who doesn’t “fear God or care about people” (Luke 18:4), can be worn down by a woman’s requests, then God, who is not unjust and who is our loving heavenly Father, will certainly answer our persistent prayers. Jesus adds, “I tell you, he will grant justice to them quickly!” (Luke 18:8).

Great news, right? We keep praying, and God is supposed to answer quickly. That’s what you might think Jesus is saying. But that interpretation raises a question: Why should we have to keep praying (and not become discouraged) if God quickly grants us justice (or whatever it is we need)? Perhaps our definition of quickly and God’s are not the same. It’s probably best for us to focus on the need for persistence rather than on the timing of God’s answer. Otherwise, there’s a good chance we will become discouraged. So what’s the takeaway from the parable? In the words of Winston Churchill, “Never give in, never, never, never.” Keep praying and trust God to answer in His perfect way and timing.

BOTTOM LINE

Prayer may be simple, but it isn’t easy. It’s good, though—not just for receiving what God gives us but also for growing our relationship with Him.
