In The Bag

“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:55-57

THE FINAL WORDS OF JESUS AT the cross were “It is finished!” (John 19:30). Jesus had accomplished what was necessary for our salvation. Sin, death, and Satan were defeated. (Jesus’ resurrection three days later completed the victory.) Sure, we will continue to have skirmishes because we still have an enemy who wants to wreak havoc on God’s people. And though our salvation is secure and “finished,” we are still in the midst of a spiritual battle.

But if Jesus’ earthly life and ministry are finished, you don’t have to run out and find another hero, another savior—all you need you can find in Jesus. If the road to salvation is complete, you don’t need to try to earn or keep your salvation through good works. And if Satan is defeated, then you need not fear him or his attacks. Continue to stand firm, and let nothing move you from your commitment to Christ.

Have you had a victory celebration in your life lately? Think back to the last team to win the World Series. How did they celebrate on the field after the final out? If they can celebrate a world championship with such emotion and exuberance, how much more should we as Christians be able to celebrate the victory of Christ at the cross? Despite how difficult life in this world can be, Jesus has overcome the world (John 16:33), and that’s reason enough to celebrate.

BOTTOM LINE

Thank God today that your spiritual victory is in the bag! That doesn’t mean there isn’t a battle still going on, but it’s a battle that you’re going to win.
