Healer Of The Humbled

Healer Of The Humbled

David was furious. “As surely as the LORD lives,” he vowed, “any man who would do such a thing deserves to die!”

2 Samuel 12:5

JESUS ONCE DESCRIBED His ministry like this: “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners” (Mark 2:17). Every one of us is sick—we’re all sinners. And just as a physically sick person needs a doctor, we all stand in great need of a Savior. The people “who think they are righteous” are just as diseased as the rest of us, but they’ve fooled themselves into believing they’re as healthy as can be. They walk through life in a precarious condition, having a fatal but easily treatable disease, but not knowing it.

In order to receive healing, we must first recognize and admit that we are indeed sick.

David was a man after God’s own heart, but he was still a man terminally sick with the disease of sin. When the prophet Nathan confronted David with a parable about his sin (2 Samuel 12), David didn’t immediately recognize himself as the villain in the story. Though he knew that adultery and murder are wrong—deserving of death, even—he didn’t see himself as a sinner. When Nathan finally explained the analogy, David cried out to God. He confessed and repented. And though his actions came with severe consequences, he found forgiveness and renewed joy.

We may not have committed sins like David’s, but without coming to terms with our own sinful hearts, we will miss out on the healing that God promises.

BOTTOM LINE

Admitting we’re sick and in need of the Great Physician is a tremendous blessing. In fact, it’s the first step toward being made whole.
