Dorm Dad

Psalm 56:3

FROM THE MOMENT they bundled her into your arms at the hospital, you’ve protected her. You swore that stray dogs, mean kids, and scary shadows would never touch her. You encouraged her before her piano recital, helped her study for numerous tests, and smiled awkwardly when she posed for pictures before the prom. Now you’ve driven many miles to a college and toted her stuff into a coed dorm, and it’s time to say good-bye.

There’s a lump in your throat the size of Pikes Peak, and you start to worry. Does she have enough money? Does she know how to change a flat tire? Will she make good friends? And most important, will she continue her walk with Jesus?

Just remember the game plan. It was never drawn up on the blackboard that you would go everywhere with her. You can’t move into the dorm. Healthy parenting includes facing down your fears and cutting some of those ties at the right moment.

Rest easy, Dad. God is going places with her that you can’t go—behind her, in front of her, and beside her. Read Psalm 139 through the eyes of your child. His plans for her are greater than even you could ever dream. Letting go is a fearful thing—but keeping her chained to you and the past would be an even scarier thought.

BOTTOM LINE

You can trust God with your fears as you release your children to Him.
