Courage When It’s Tough

From six disasters he will rescue you; even in the seventh, he will keep you from evil. He will save you from death in time of famine, from the power of the sword in time of war.

Job 5:19-20

“MEN TODAY ARE facing incredible adversity,” says evangelist Phil Waldrep. “They are losing their jobs, their houses, some are losing their wives to death or infidelity. Some men feel they have lost everything.”

Have you ever been in those shoes? Are you there now—or do you have a friend who is? The Old Testament book of Job gives us a sterling example to follow when we think we’ve lost it all, including any hope for recovery. Job was a man who indeed lost everything, yet he stayed faithful to God.

Even when doubt, fear, or loss challenges our faith, we can count on the reality that God never changes. He cares, He knows our hurts, and He want us to turn to Him. Just reminding ourselves that God loves us should restore a measure of peace and assurance, no matter how bad things get. When you’re suffering, think about Job. Even though Job’s wife had urged him to curse God and even though his friends turned against him, Job remained faithful. Why? Because he knew that God would be faithful. Be sure to read the end of Job’s story, where God restores his family and his wealth.

Even in seasons of great loss, we can remain faithful—by the grace of God. If you’re going through a tough time, lean hard on your heavenly Father for strength and hope.

BOTTOM LINE

When your world falls apart, it’s okay to ask questions and to feel pain. But it’s also the best time to remember that God is always faithful.
