Choices

I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! You can make this choice by loving the LORD your God, obeying him, and committing yourself firmly to him. This is the key to your life.

Deuteronomy 30:19-20

WHAT ARE SOME OF the right choices you’ve made? The girl you married? Disciplining and requiring respect from your children? Staying in a lower-paying job because it was best for your family? What rewarding consequences our right decisions bring!

Have you ever made any wrong choices? Taking a promotion you knew would keep you away from your family more without seeking God’s will about it first? Experimenting with drinking or drugs as a teenager? Of course, those are big choices, but what about the choices we face daily—saying hurtful words in anger, staying in addictive lifestyles, or cheating on our expense account at work? Bad consequences will follow.

Look at the choices made by Joseph and David in the Bible. In Genesis 39, Joseph flees from the advances of his employer’s wife. He later gains greater power and position because of his integrity. On the other hand, David commits adultery, and that terrible choice spirals down into deception and murder (2 Samuel 11). He pays a huge price in the end.

As today’s Scripture advises, God gives us choices that have monumental consequences. It’s up to us to make the right choices—integrity and character at home, at work, and in our walk with the Lord. There is nothing better than the joy and peace that come from obeying God.

BOTTOM LINE

Resolve today to prayerfully seek God’s wisdom and guidance regarding every choice you face.
