Beware Of Seductive Words

For the lips of an immoral woman are as sweet as honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil.

Proverbs 5:3

MIKE HAD BEEN STRUGGLING with the question of identity. For all of his bravado on the outside, he was weak and insecure on the inside. He needed someone to pat him on the back; kiss him on the cheek; and tell him how good he was, how good-looking he was, how wonderful, great, strong, and powerful he was. He found that someone seated in the restaurant booth next to his as he was eating alone while his wife was out of town. The conversation got out of hand and eventually led to a rendezvous in a motel room. This meeting led to another and another until it became a full-blown affair.

Benjamin Disraeli was correct: “Talk to a man about himself and he will listen for hours.” Mike listened, and it cost him dearly—his self-respect, his happiness, and his marriage. If only he had heeded Solomon’s advice.

The immoral woman that Solomon writes about in Proverbs understands men’s longings. She uses her speech to flatter, engage, and ambush unknowing victims. Many a man has fallen prey to smooth talk and flattering speech. Beware of deceptive speech, inappropriate conversation, exaggerated compliments, and coarse jokes. When your warning antenna goes up with the soft touch and the flattering words of a woman who is not your wife, pay attention. Those words may lead to destruction.
