Ambassadors Or Undercover?

You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.

Matthew 5:13

IT CAN BE TRICKY THESE DAYS TO be a bold Christian in the workplace, so many of us tend to keep our faith undercover. Maybe we don’t want to be known as religious nutcases, or perhaps we believe that religion’s not an appropriate topic of conversation at work. It could be that we lack the confidence to answer any questions or rebuttals, so we let fear keep us from speaking up. Whatever the reason, we stay mum when someone shares a struggle, brags about a sin, or shares their belief in some ideology not centered on Jesus. We have in our hearts the solution that others need, but we keep it under wraps until we’re in “safe company.”

Jesus taught that we’re to be salt and light in the world. Salt by itself doesn’t nourish or satisfy a need, but it makes one thirsty for the water that does satisfy. Likewise, light by itself doesn’t solve a situation, but it enables us to see the right path. Both salt and light have a positive effect on their environments; they are not neutral. Light can’t blend in with the darkness around it, and salt that isn’t salty . . . well, Jesus said it’s useless. Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:20 that we are “Christ’s ambassadors.” That means we represent Him and speak up for His interests. Keeping quiet when the world around us needs God’s comfort and direction is like putting a light under a basket—it doesn’t make sense.

BOTTOM LINE

Don’t hide your light or lose your saltiness. Ask God to give you discernment and courage.
