A Must-have Tool

A Must-have Tool

I was a skilled craftsman beside Him. I was His delight every day, always rejoicing before Him.

Proverbs 8:30, HCSB

WHAT IS THE ONE TOOL you can’t live without? Some might say their table saw, whereas others would fight you if you tried to take away their battery-operated drill. So what’s a key tool for an apprentice of the Master Carpenter? It’s wisdom.

When God created the heavens and the earth, wisdom was a crucial tool on His belt. When He formed the heart of the giraffe, the legs of the cheetah, and the fins of the killer whale, He used the wisdom tool. And when He breathed life into Adam and Eve, knowing what it would cost Him to restore the relationship with humanity once they sinned, His wisdom put the finishing touches on creation.

Hakam is the Hebrew word for wisdom. It carries the idea of “living skillfully.” Where our knowledge of God intersects with and influences the way we live our lives, at that point we can be said to possess wisdom. Wisdom is knowledge of God that leads to right living. It’s that must-have tool that you’ll reach for every day. It will become well-worn with time, yet it will never become dull. In fact, it grows sharper and stronger the more you use it, if you make the effort to obtain it.

So how do you get wisdom?

Ask for it (James 1:5), live with a healthy fear of God (Proverbs 1:7), and meditate on God’s Word (Psalm 1:1-2). You’ll wonder how you ever got along without it.

BOTTOM LINE

Ask God to give you wisdom that will affect you for the rest of your life. And ask Him to give you the desire to keep growing in wisdom.
