A Different Gospel

I am shocked that you are turning away so soon from God, who called you to himself through the loving mercy of Christ. You are following a different way that pretends to be the Good News but is not the Good News at all.

Galatians 1:6-7

THE GOSPEL COMES TO us with revolutionary, life-changing power. Paul says it is the power of God (Romans 1:16). It simultaneously demolishes human pride and despair. It produces joy, freedom, courage, hope, purpose, and passion. It is given to us completely free of charge. We don’t have to qualify to receive it—in fact, we cannot qualify to receive it. It does not operate according to human logic or wisdom. Rather, it operates according to God’s wisdom.

The gospel is good news—the best news ever. It is the message of God’s grace based on the historical events of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. As such, it is objective, not just a theory someone dreamed up. It produces experiences, but it is not an experience. The gospel is the unchanging, reliable, and foundational news that Christ died for our sins to bring us back to God. And yet we’re tempted to depart from it. We’re tempted to look for something more or different. But according to Paul, we look in vain because there is no gospel other than the one that has been delivered to us once and for all.

Drifting from the gospel is a serious matter because it diminishes God’s glory and damages our faith. God is glorified in the gospel as no one else is. His matchless grace is on full display. And the gospel sets us free like nothing else can. So hang on to the gospel with all you’ve got. It’s the best news ever.

BOTTOM LINE

The gospel is not something to take for granted; it’s something to be upheld, delighted in, and shared. Ask God to give you a greater love for the gospel.
