The Truth about God

I am confident I will see the LORD’s goodness while I am here in the land of the living.

Psalm 27:13

“I have a really hard time seeing God as my Father, since my earthly father was so distant.”

I heard this admission from a woman at a Bible study I attend. At best, she has a rocky relationship with her father—when they are speaking at all. She has been a Christian for years, but she still struggles with believing that God is a loving Father, since the earthly example she was given is just not. Nodding in agreement over our friend’s struggle, many other women shared ways that they have mistakenly viewed God because of their own relationships and life experiences.

We all see God through the lens of our experiences, and we all struggle with what we believe about him and his character. Our experiences can skew the way we view God. Often we don’t even realize this is happening.

So what do we do when we aren’t sure what is true about God? We can start by reading the Bible and finding truth there. When we wonder if God loves us, we can start by searching for Scripture that tells us that he does (such as John 3:16). When we worry about the future and if God can be trusted, then we can look for Scripture that reminds us of his care and concern for us (such as 1 Peter 5:7).

Whatever we are facing, we can find a promise or a truth about God and his character that will sustain us. This is important, because if we don’t believe that God is kind and loving, how can we extend kindness and love to others? We have to trust in God’s goodness so that we will be able to freely give it away to others. We need to have the confidence to say, “I will see the LORD’s goodness.”

Spend some time thinking about what misconceptions you have believed about God. Find a verse of Scripture to remind you of who he truly is, then text that verse to a friend who may need to hear it too.
