The Pet Foster Family

If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?

1 John 3:17

“Honey,” I asked, “can we be a foster home for Scampi?” My husband raised his eyebrow suspiciously: “Scampi?”

Scampi is a gray-and-white tabby cat who is what I affectionately call a cat-dog. Unlike many cats, he is cuddly and friendly, and he is one of the most delightful cats I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. His owner was a single mom working hard to provide a better life for her son, and she was faced with having to temporarily move to an apartment where Scampi was not welcome. This cat had been a part of her family for many years, and she was heartbroken at the thought of losing him. I don’t remember if she asked or if I offered, but I found myself asking my husband to consider becoming a cat foster parent for Scampi—it was just for nine months!

Scampi joined our home soon thereafter and quickly became a familiar companion, joining me every time I sat down and curling up at the foot of our bed in the evenings. He was sweet and friendly, and he quickly wove himself into the fabric of our family.

As the months passed, we stayed in touch with Scampi’s owner, giving her updates and assuring her that all was well. When she contacted me midspring of the following year with the exciting news that she was moving to a new place and that she would be picking up Scampi next weekend, I couldn’t help but feel a tiny bit sad for us while feeling joy for her.

We are called to have a compassionate response when we see a brother or sister in need. Providing a safe spot for Scampi to live while his owner transitioned into a safer housing arrangement was the perfect compassionate response in that situation. Where might God be asking you to show compassion?
