The Kindness of a Stranger

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Ephesians 4:29, NIV

It’s a common experience for parents: you take your kids out to eat thinking this will be the day they are able to handle it, only to find yourself chasing a child who will not sit still, cleaning up spilled milk, and trying to stop little hands from throwing food. So much for a relaxing dinner out with family.

One night out, as I took my youngest to the bathroom with me—more as a distraction for her than anything—the two older ladies at the table next to us smiled and commented on “what beautiful children” we have. I nodded and thanked them while wrangling my daughter down the corridor to the bathroom.

On our way back, the two ladies were getting ready to leave, and as they walked past us, one stopped for a moment, told me again that I have great kids, and then said, “You’re doing great; keep going, Mama!” Tears immediately sprang to my eyes, and I could have hugged her. She had the ability to see what I could not in the moment—that I do have beautiful kids and a wonderful family—and she encouraged me to keep going. Sometimes in the middle of the chaos I can forget my blessings. The kindness of a stranger in that moment was just the reminder I needed.

It seems so simple—a little encouragement from a stranger—taking no more than a few moments. When we put kindness into action, we see the needs, big and small, of those all around and then we attempt to meet those needs. How often do we see people who would benefit from our helpful words instead of our harsh glares, especially when they feel like they are failing or not doing a good job? Just think how much our kindness would build them up.

Be conscious of someone who crosses your path who may be in need of a little encouragement. Take time to stop, notice, and offer encouragement to this person. It could make their whole day.
