A cheerful heart is good medicine.

Proverbs 17:22

My friend told me she had been sick for months—and I hadn’t even realized how much time had passed. Although I consider her a close friend, our visits are infrequent since we don’t live in the same town. Something had settled into her lungs, and she was coughing constantly, in pain, and at her wits’ end about how to get well.

My friend had two children already and a third on the way, and I could sense her frustration even though she was trying to make the best of it. She knew her kids desperately wanted to get out of the house, but she just didn’t feel well enough to take them anywhere. After chatting with her, I had an idea: what if I had some boredom busters delivered to her door?

I enlisted my oldest daughter’s help because she wants to be an artist (and an astronaut and a dancer) when she grows up. In pursuit of this goal, Elise is constantly drawing pictures of rainbows, painting canvases in the garage, using up all the stickers in the house, and asking for new projects to fill her time. I have a closet that’s overflowing with art supplies stacked in precariously messy piles, and despite the disorder, those supplies sure do come in handy when my children need a distraction.

So after talking to Elise about our friends, I sat down with her at the computer and picked out all the craft supplies and projects we thought they might like, then had them delivered to the family. We couldn’t do anything to help my friend overcome her health challenge, but we knew we could do something to cheer her up and let her know that we loved and cared for her.
