Our Source Of Strength
Our Source of Strength
God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.
Psalm 46:1
A few months ago, the son of a high school friend was buried. I went to his funeral hesitantly. I was alone and unsure of what to expect. Having not been to my hometown in several years, I had a bit of anxiety over whom I would see and how I should act.
As I pulled into the already overfilled parking lot, my anxiety continued to rise. I took a deep breath, exited my car, and quickly entered my old high school. The gym was almost completely full, and I hurried to the back corner, head down, to find a place to sit. A few minutes later, a dear friend from high school started up the bleacher steps, immediately recognized me, and took the seat next to me. She said she was grateful to find someone she knew, and I told her I felt the same.
The family took their places, and I watched as this brave mother sat through the ceremony to say good-bye to her only child. I grieved as I thought about how hard this must be for her. I quietly prayed for her as tears streamed down my cheeks.
As I headed back to my car for the hour-long ride home, I was still upset but also glad that I had decided to come. Since the ceremony, I have continued to pray for my friend who lost her child and have sent her messages of love, prayer, and encouragement.
Sometimes I just want to hide from the pain of this world. It’s in these painful moments that we can find comfort in Scriptures that remind us that God is our refuge and strength. We are reminded that we do not carry our burdens alone, and anytime we or those we love are hurting, we can bring our pain to God, and he will carry us.
