Dreaming Together

Dreaming Together

Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another.

Hebrews 10:24-25

Kristin, Julie, and I have been blogging, writing, and speaking together for the past several years. When we started out with the simple dream of writing a book, we never imagined it would take us this far. We never imagined after writing that first book together that there would be more books and a blog and speaking engagements and a writer’s conference.

But here’s what we’ve come to realize: we’d never have gotten this far on our own. Part of the fun of this dream is that it is a shared adventure, a joining together with one another, spurring each other on, celebrating joy and sorrow—all together. This community of three has been a stronger cord than any of us would have been on our own. I know that many people go it alone and write, blog, or speak individually—and they do it really well. But I would dare to say that even people who appear to be dreaming alone usually have a group of others with whom they share ideas and dreams, lending support and encouragement in community together.

This is one of the beautiful things about dreams: it’s more fun to achieve them when there are others to do it with you. When you think about your life, who has encouraged your dreams? Who has pushed you beyond what you thought possible? Maybe that hasn’t been your experience, and you don’t have a group of people who support you or your dreams. If you find yourself in this situation, first, take your dreams to God and ask him to give you wisdom and encouragement as you pursue what he has placed on your heart. Second, ask him to bring someone who can offer you encouragement and support, and in return, someone you can listen to and spur on in love and in good deeds. This Christian life is meant to be lived together, so find your people—they need you as much as you need them.
