Celebrate With Those Who Celebrate

Celebrate with Those Who Celebrate

Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.

Romans 12:15, NIV

It was a rare date night out for Tim and me, and as a stay-at-home mom, I was looking forward to visiting with other adults. We made our way to the table, sat down with the two other couples, and started chatting, perusing the menu, and ordering appetizers.

As our dinner progressed, a sudden movement caught our eyes. A few tables over, a man was getting down on one knee, a ring box outstretched toward the woman across from him. Though I didn’t hear his words, it was obvious that he was asking the woman to marry him. As she nodded and smiled and wiped tears from her eyes, I found myself looking away for a moment, overcome by the intimacy of such a private moment. Other than participating in my own proposal, I’d never seen someone get engaged, and even as an observer, it was an emotional experience. Blinking my own tears away, I joined the other diners as they burst into spontaneous applause while the couple embraced.

I whispered to Tim that we should send over a bottle of champagne to congratulate them, and he quietly signaled to the waiter and put in our anonymous request. As we stole glances at the happy couple throughout the night, I felt my own joy at the occasion mirroring the faces of the newly engaged pair as they raised their glasses to toast each other.

Sometimes kindness requires us to grieve with those who grieve, but it’s just as important to enjoy this life and celebrate with those who have something to celebrate. Celebration is a gift from God, and honoring the special moments and momentous occasions of friends and neighbors is a great opportunity to show them the kindness of your attention.
