A Simple Invitation
A Simple Invitation
I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home.
Matthew 25:35
Sitting in the pew, I just knew this wasn’t where I’d be regularly attending services. At only twenty-two years old, I was determined to make my own way in town but had agreed to join my sister at her church, just this once, before finding a place of my own.
As I was exiting the sanctuary, a young woman came up and greeted me and asked who I was, before sharing a bit about herself. She immediately went on to tell me about a young-adult progressive dinner that was coming up the following week. One course was being hosted at her house, and she asked if I’d like to help her. She was so kind, and since I had very few friends in the area, I said yes. That was the start of a beautiful friendship, one that also brought me into a community of friends I so desperately needed. (I also never ended up leaving that little community to look for another church.)
I often think about her invitation—how my life would be different had she not invited me to her house. How such a small act of kindness had such a profound impact on my life. As a part of that church community, I found friendship and growth in my faith that was vital to those early adult years. I am forever grateful for her willingness to step outside of her own comfort zone, say hello to a stranger, and invite me into her group of friends.
We just never know what can happen if we’re willing to open up our lives to those around us. Being willing to be the first to greet a new person, whether at work, at church, or in some other group, may start a friendship, or at the very least, allow someone who is a little lonely to feel welcomed. Jesus reminded us that when we invite the stranger in, we are inviting in Christ himself. When we acknowledge those who need a friend, it’s as if we are extending the very love and kindness of Jesus toward that person. And that is no small act.
— Today’s Act of Kindness —
The next time you see someone new at work, at church, or in your neighborhood, greet them and welcome them into your friendship circle or community.
