A Meal on the Doorstep

If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?

1 John 3:17

I was sick and miserable, so weak that I wondered how I could walk up the stairs by myself, much less chase after my young children. After leaving a message asking for prayers for a quick recovery on the Facebook page for women in our church, I was inundated by comments that folks were praying and by offers to help out. While I appreciated each of the messages, a text from a friend spoke the loudest: “Can I bring you a meal?”

A few minutes later, I had yet to respond, but she had already texted again: “Never mind. I am bringing you a meal today! If you aren’t able to answer the door, it’s okay. I’ll leave it outside.”

All too often, I find myself saying to those who are struggling with a hardship, “Let me know if you need anything.” Although my words are sincere, if I’m honest, they aren’t always helpful. People don’t really want to impose, and asking for help can be hard. Yet if we see someone in need and do nothing to help, how can the love we claim to have for God appear to be anything but hypocritical?

Instead, ask those who are struggling with an illness or emergency if you can do specific, concrete things to make life a little easier. There are simple, nonpushy ways to ask if you can help out: “What day could I bring a meal for you this week?” “I’m going to the grocery store this morning, what can I pick up for you?” “My girls would love to see your kids for a playdate. Could I come pick up your kids for a few hours on Saturday to give you a break?”

Your little act of kindness will go a long way to make someone who is struggling feel loved, cared for, and blessed.
