Yes And Amen

All the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.

We recently had a “Yes Day” at our house. I said yes to as many things as possible for the whole day. That morning, we picked up caramel ribbon crunch Frappuccinos—minus the coffee—from Starbucks, strolled through Target, then browsed the dollar store. After that, we ate at Jimmy John’s for lunch, then drove to Hyland Park, a giant playground with what felt like a million kids running around. Next, we headed to the Blue Sun Soda Shop to pick up specialty sodas for later and ended our adventures with tres leches ice cream at a local shop. When we returned home, a quiet family movie night with popcorn was the perfect ending to our fun-filled day.

I’ll admit that my kids ate way too much sugar, but we had a blast.

As I reminisced about our day later, I realized that we often think of God as a cosmic killjoy, just waiting to ruin our fun—when the truth is, he often tells us yes. Yes, we can enjoy the beauty of creation. Yes, he placed us in a family. Yes, he provided the skills we need to accomplish our work. Yes, he sparked the ideas that became dreams in our hearts. So much of our enjoyment of this life directly results from a good God who tells his children yes with fondness.

The ultimate “Yes” is Christ himself, whose death and resurrection fulfilled the promises of God. He is a living “Amen” (meaning “It is so”) to those promises. Yes, he loves us. Yes, he wants us to be part of his family. Yes, our purpose and meaning can be found in him. Yes, we can live for an eternity in heaven with him.

Yes and amen. What a wondrous God we serve.
