Whispering Truth
Whispering Truth
“Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the LORD told him. And as Elijah stood there, the LORD passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.
You don’t need to perform for me. I heard a gentle whisper as I prayed quietly before everyone else in the house was up. It’d been a particularly tough couple of weeks, nothing terrible, just busy. A lot to do and not enough time to do it. I love you just as you are. Beyond behavior or titles or to-do lists. I am near. Ready to help. Always. Call to me.
I wiped tears as the words became a balm to my weary heart. As I took a little extra time that morning to sit with my Bible and journal open, pen in hand, I was struck by the fact that God’s words are true. And always available to me. Sometimes I just have to slow down, turn off outside noise, and listen. God is waiting to give us all we need for the day when we pause for a few moments, quietly listening for that still, small voice.
In the Old Testament, there’s a story of a prophet named Elijah who was waiting to hear from God. As he waited, a mighty storm passed by, followed by an earthquake and then a fire. But God wasn’t in any of those things. After all of that had passed, Elijah heard a “gentle whisper.” The voice of the Lord had come. Probably not in the way that Elijah had expected, but it had come just the same.
We aren’t so different from Elijah. We may not face storms or earthquakes every day, but we all have things swirling around us that can distract us from hearing God. Sometimes we have to shut everything else off and just be with him. It’s not always easy to do, but it’s so worth it.
