Unchanging God
Unchanging God
If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is.
I was upset. Someone close to me had broken a promise, and it wasn’t the first time. I was discouraged and angry, but mostly just hurt that it had happened again.
As this person and I talked through the events that led to their poor choice, it was logical to my brain, but my heart still hurt. I knew that their history of trauma added to their unhealthy decisions. I also knew they wanted better for themselves and for our relationship.
Over the next few days, I brought all my emotions to God—all my anger, hurt, and even fear over an uncertain future. All of my “what ifs” I laid out in prayer. What if things don’t change? What if it happens again? What if this is the best our relationship will ever be?
As I prayed, the Scripture that came to my mind again and again was that even when we are unfaithful, God remains faithful because “he cannot deny who he is.” I thought about my loved ones and how God’s grace still extends to them. I thought about my own imperfect life and how often I sense God’s peace and forgiveness when I mess up. How I never worry that God will abandon me or tell me he’s had enough. He stays faithful. Even when I am not. Even when those around me aren’t. I was reminded that my full reliance is to be on Christ—he is my constant. Even when others disappoint me, God will never change.
As we reconciled and put new boundaries into place, I was encouraged to love those around me fully while remembering that God will stand by me even if they disappoint me again.
God is many things, but one quality I am most grateful for is his faithfulness. Sometimes people we love will let us down. Sometimes we will be the ones to let others down. Sometimes we will need to establish boundaries to be healthy, but God will remain steadfast no matter what happens in our earthly relationships. Of this, we can be sure. Don’t be afraid to put your complete trust in Christ; he will always be near.
