The Lie Of Aloneness

Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed.

“You’ve got to figure it out yourself.”

“No one else will help.”

“You’re on your own.”

These thoughts came to me and festered one morning as I ran around my house, mulling over everything that needed to be done. The weight of it had me feeling and believing that it was all up to me.

By the time my husband returned several hours later, I was disgruntled. Sensing my unhappiness, he tried to step in and help with some tasks on my list. I rebuffed his efforts, already firmly engulfed in my self-pity and anger. He backed off, giving me space.

Later, as we drove together to a gathering of friends, I burst into tears. “I feel very alone.”

My husband looked at me and nodded, affirming my feelings; he knows this is a faulty belief I’ve struggled with my entire adult life.

“But you’re not,” he whispered. “You’re not alone. I’m with you.”

I sighed, allowing his words to make their way past my mind and right to my heart. “I’m sorry I was upset.”

“I know,” he said as he took my hand and squeezed it. His presence reminded me that I really am not alone.

God made us to be in relationship with others. There’s nothing the enemy would love more than to make us feel like we are all alone. Alone in our struggles. Alone in our relationships. Alone in life. But this is simply not true. God is there. Always. And he’s placed people around us to provide love and support, even if it doesn’t always seem like it. (Sometimes we may need to be the ones to let others know we need help.) Scripture reminds us that togetherness is a gift from God because two can help each other succeed. We get so much further together than we ever do alone. Don’t believe the lie that no one else is there. God is. People are. You just need to look and see.
