Support Through Prayer

All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.

“How can we pray for you?”

It’s the question asked at the end of every one of our church community gatherings, and it’s probably my favorite part of our meetings together. Of course, I love the Bible reading and discussion—I’m always challenged and encouraged—but sharing needs and offering support and prayer is the most cherished time for me.

As I listen to others’ needs and joys, I feel encouraged in what I am facing in my own life. Knowing others have their own burdens yet are willing to walk with me through mine reminds me that overcoming difficulties together is better than doing it alone.

Sometimes people have requests regarding jobs and finances; other times, they need prayer for children going through challenging seasons. Someone else may share about a family we all know is struggling and offer ways to work together to help. Others have pregnancy concerns or health issues. Nothing is too big or too small to be mentioned.

Throughout my week, I’ll whisper prayers for the requests I heard, trusting that God is with our group no matter what they face that day, and knowing that they are praying the same for me.

Scripture tells us that the early church devoted themselves to teaching, fellowship, sharing meals, and prayer. And our lives today should look very similar to this. We need the same things the first Jesus followers did—community, teaching, support, and prayer. Although many things have changed over time, these things have remained, and they are essential for all Jesus followers.
