Scavenger Hunt

Scavenger Hunt

Let all that I am praise the LORD; may I never forget the good things he does for me.

Psalm 103:2

I challenge you (yes, lovely reader, I’m talking to you!) to a gratitude scavenger hunt. Do it on your own as an exercise in sacred, worshipful gratitude; make it a friendship or workplace challenge; or invite kids you love to join the fun—this is your scavenger hunt, so tweak it to fit your life and circumstances perfectly.

The rules: we will search for joy, recording our observations over the next five days. Suggested categories are as follows:

1. Taste. Take a sip, nibble—or more!—of what makes your taste buds sing with joy. Don’t scarf your treats; savor them as they roll around your mouth. Write down three things you loved about each taste and why.

2. Beauty. Look for different versions of beauty, adding them to your list. What catches your eye in creation? What about an item made with human hands? Is there something fleeting (like a flower bloom) that you find pleasing? What about something enduring—like a mountain vista? Briefly explain why you picked the items you added to your list.

3. Sound. What sounds bring you joy? Do you have a favorite song? What about the ringtone when a cherished person calls? Birdsong? Laughter? An appealing accent from a country you long to visit? Add your favorite sounds to your list; it’s okay if you have more than three!

4. Touch. Do you love the feel of a book in your hands? What about snuggling up with your dog or cat? A cozy soft shirt? Concentrate on all the things you touch with your hands and feet or what you brush against as you walk through the world, noting the ones that spark joy.

5. Scent. Walk through your day with your nose leading the way. Do you have a favorite scented lotion or perfume? A soothing candle or diffuser recipe of essential oils? What enticing smells are wafting around a bakery or coffee shop you visit regularly? What scents evoke memories of loved ones or favorite past places?

On the sixth day, sit before God as you review your lists, pairing them with today’s verse.
