Road Trip Memories

“You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power. For you created all things, and they exist because you created what you pleased.”

Revelation 4:11

My family and I love to travel, especially by car. We make a game of seeing how many license plates from different states we can find, and we play a lot of the alphabet game. We listen to music and sing along, and we look for interesting stops to make along the way. Although there are moments of boredom, the drive has become a favorite part of any trip for me.

On one trip, we drove from Minnesota to Texas, and as we traveled, I was struck by the vastness around us. The barren land that seemingly went on for miles. The change in terrain from forests to fields to grazing land. As I stared out at the enormousness of the earth and the very different landscapes we passed, I couldn’t help but feel enamored once again with the greatness of our God, who creates all things with care and creativity. The more I travel, the more I wish to see all he has made. The earth indeed is incredible, and I am grateful for a God whose cleverness and imagination know no bounds.

No matter where we live, it’s easy to get accustomed to the scenery around us—to no longer be enthralled with what God has created because it is too familiar. Sometimes going to a new place, even just a few hours away, can change our perspective. Doing so reminds us of just how great our God is.

Scripture tells us that God created all things, and they exist because of him. As a result, he is worthy to receive glory and honor and power. When we are intentional about stepping into a new place or even looking outside with fresh eyes, we can’t help but be in awe of the greatness of God and grateful for all he has made.
