Learning From Others

Learning from Others

To all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.

John 1:12

Our youngest three children are in the Spanish immersion program through our school district. Every year, native Spanish-speaking teachers come from all over the world to teach our kids. It has been a rich learning experience for them to not only learn a second language but be exposed to other cultural experiences as well.

The Amity interns (the Spanish-speaking teachers) stay with host families for the school year and then once a month or so stay with another family to gain additional experience while they’re here. After several years of having our children in the program, we finally decided to sign up as a weekend host family.

Sara came for the first time one cold fall day. I was a little nervous about how she would respond to our family, but she fit in perfectly. She loves our kids, and we find ourselves playing games, talking about what it was like growing up in Colombia, and making food together. Sara is teaching us things that we had not known, and we are showing her new aspects of the United States as well. She has a strong faith in God, and we have been able to connect over all the ways that he is showing up and guiding our lives. It has been a rewarding experience both for her and for my family, and I am so grateful for her presence.

It can be easy to forget that the people of God can be found all over the world, not just in our own country. It is awesome to see how God is working in lives both near and far. Scripture says that all who believe and accept Jesus have the right to become children of God. What a glorious promise this is. God loves us as his children, just as he loves people in every other place around the world. Taking the time to learn about others and their experiences is one way we can grow in our understanding of all the different people groups God loves as his own.
