A Warm Welcome
A Warm Welcome
Always be eager to practice hospitality.
“Why don’t we just stay with them?” my husband asked as he peered over my shoulder at the computer screen. I’d been looking for hours at vacation rentals in Texas for an upcoming trip.
“Because—don’t you think it’d be strange? We don’t know them that well. Besides, they just had a baby. I really don’t want to intrude.”
He shrugged. “Haddie did offer for us to stay at their home. Why don’t you just talk to her?”
“I’ll think about it,” I said, not really wanting to consider it. But as the days went on and I couldn’t find a good fit for our family, I sent Haddie a text, hesitantly asking what she thought of us staying with them.
“Of course! We’d love to have you!” she quickly responded. I let out a sigh of relief as we went on to discuss food and activities for our trip.
As the weeks got closer to us leaving, I was nervous. Will we get along? Will our kids be okay and not act too crazy? Will we have things to talk about? I whispered my questions as prayers to God as I packed our vehicle and we made the trek to Texas.
The moment we walked in the door, all my worry was put to rest. Haddie and Leo were so kind and thoughtful, setting up bedrooms with everything we’d need, stocking foods our kids liked, and making plans to go out and enjoy activities each day.
We spent the next several days sharing stories, telling jokes, and just getting to know one another like we hadn’t before. We felt so welcomed, known, and loved.
As we hugged to leave, I couldn’t help but think that our proximity to one another, staying in their home, made it possible. We drove away grateful for our time but even more so for the deeper connection.
God encourages us to practice hospitality. Although there are many reasons for this, one of the most important, I believe, is that it opens us up to deeper relationships and connections with those around us, allowing us to give and receive love, kindness, and care as little else will.
