The Hands and Feet of Jesus

When we get together, I want to encourage you in your faith, but I also want to be encouraged by yours.

The doorbell began to peal as women arrived, trickled into the kitchen, and spilled over into the dining room. Laughter rang out, cutting through the hum of conversation and the clatter of plates being filled with snacks.

We were gathering together in my home for a special craft night, one where each of the women would create two boxes of handcrafted items: one for us, and one for a woman in Minnesota who had experienced abuse or been trafficked. The boxes were the vision of Rachel, the creator of Uplift a Box, who wanted to reach women who often feel alone, forgotten, or unheard—women who need to be reminded that they are loved by God.

Using the materials and instructions provided, each participant worked on creating a tasseled key chain and beautiful ombré coasters. Working steadily, we assembled the boxes with care, ending with each woman writing a note or a prayer on a slip of paper and tucking it into the box. Sneaking a peek at the notes, I saw heartfelt messages and Bible verses penned with love and accompanied by smiley faces and hearts, encouraging each woman who received a note to recognize how loved, valued, and beautiful she was. As the night ended and I closed the door behind the last friend, I felt profoundly grateful for the opportunity to unite with friends for such a worthy cause.

Friendship is fun, but it’s often when we join together with one another that we find our friendship deepened and our faith strengthened. As we work toward a common goal—whether it’s sitting next to each other at an event like our craft night, volunteering side by side within the community, or cooking a meal together at the local homeless shelter—our faith is simultaneously challenged and encouraged. As friends, let’s spur one another on to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the world. Not only will we have the opportunity to encourage others but we’ll find ourselves encouraged as well.
