Taking a Risk

I listen carefully to what God the LORD is saying, for he speaks peace to his faithful people.

My sister-in-law April told me about a woman at her church whom she first knew only through their work together in the preschool room. That was until one Sunday when Monica asked April if she’d like to have dinner together. Even though Monica was a single widow without children and April was a married mom of three, April happily agreed and felt honored to be asked. They spent the evening getting to know one another, and since that first night they have formed a friendship that supersedes any differences they may have. April told me, “We give one another perspective on where we each are in life and remind one another of the gifts of the season that we are each in.” Having a friend in a different stage of life has offered April a different viewpoint, one she often needs in her own life but has a hard time seeing for herself. Monica reminds April of the good in singleness, and April always leaves her visits grateful for Monica’s perspective.

April told me how brave Monica was to reach out to her when they really did not know one another except in passing. Monica told her that she did so because she felt like God was nudging her to, and she wanted to be obedient. But what if she hadn’t listened or obeyed? They both could have easily missed out on the blessing that their friendship has been to both of them.

Being sensitive to God’s nudging in friendship is so important because we never know who God may bring across our path that could potentially be a good friend. We are told to listen carefully to what the Lord is saying, and that applies to many things in life, including relationships with others. We never know who around us may be in need of a friend or how great of a blessing they may be to us if we’ll only be obedient to step out and meet someone new.

Invite someone to coffee or dinner when you feel a nudge from God to do so, and see if you do not gain a new friend.
