Build Bridges
Build Bridges
If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.
At just twenty years old, my husband, Kyle, had moved out of his parents’ house, dropped out of college, and was living with friends while working full time. He wasn’t making the healthiest choices, and his parents knew it. His mother, Kathy, told me years later that she prayed constantly for him during that season and that she felt God’s response was for her to just keep loving him and remaining positive in his life. She knew that berating him about his choices wasn’t going to do any good, and she wanted to keep their relationship intact by not burning any bridges.
She talked with him about Jesus and kept praying for him, but ultimately, she entrusted his life to God. She told me it wasn’t easy, but she knew it was the best way to handle the situation. Little by little, she and her husband began to see their son grow once again in his relationship with God. It didn’t happen overnight, but they knew if they remained patient and trusted God, Kyle would come back around, even though they could not see it at the time.
Even now, the truth of Kathy’s words lingers in my mind as I think about relationships that I am currently in with people who are not always making the best or healthiest choices. We all need wisdom from God to know how to navigate relationships with others, whether family members or friendships, and the Bible is clear that if we need wisdom, we can ask God and confidently know that he will give it to us. We don’t want to unnecessarily break ties or burn bridges with others who are making poor choices in their lives but rather give them to God in prayer and act in wisdom and love toward them.
