WHATEVER THE WEATHER
Read 1 Timothy 6:6-8; Psalm 103:1-5.
“Whew!” Dad said as he picked up the newspaper. “This hot weather is unbearable! After this summer, I’ll never complain about being too cold again.”
With a twinkle in his eye, Brad ran from the room. He returned quicly with his mom’s smartphone. Sneaking up behind Dad, Brad hit a button on the phone.
“Whew!” Dad’s voice boomed from the speaker. “This cold is unbearable! I’ll never complain about being too warm again. I wish we had a hot sun right now.”
“What!” Startled, Dad dropped the newspaper and twisted around in his chair to look at Brad. “When did you record that?” demanded Dad.
Brad laughed. “Last winter,” he replied. “We hear the same thing every summer and every winter. We just wanted you to hear it yourself.”
Dad laughed too. “Caught by my own words. I guess we’re hard to please, aren’t we?”
Mom said, “We often complain about what we don’t like instead of giving thanks for what we have.”
“I don’t complain about the weather,” said Brad. “I like summer, and I like winter.” He grinned at his parents.
“I wasn’t talking only about weather complaints,” said Mom.
“I know,” Brad admitted.
“Good!” said Mom. “Then I assume you’ll do the lunch dishes without complaining. You’ll be remembering with gratitude the good meal you just ate.”
“Oh, Mom,” protested Brad, but he began to clear the table.
“I’d better go pull weeds in the garden and give thanks that I don’t have to shovel the driveway today,” said Dad. He put his arm around Brad’s shoulder and gave it a squeeze. “I appreciate the good lesson!” added Dad. “Did you record this conversation too? I might need to be reminded of it again when the snow starts to pile up.”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Are you content with what you have? Are you unhappy because you can’t get a new shirt, or do you give thanks for your new shoes? Be content with what you have, and thank God for the gifts He’s given you today.
