WATER RESCUE
Read 2 Timothy 1:6-11.
Jase ran into the garage where his older brother was working on his car. “Cole! Come quick! Brody fell into Mrs. Scott’s pool! She can’t get him out!”
Cole grabbed a broom from the corner and shot out of the garage to help their small neighbor boy. Jase ran after him and watched as his brother jumped into the pool and swam to where Brody was thrashing around. Cole had Brody grab the end of the broom and pulled him to the side of the pool, where Jase and Mrs. Scott lifted him out. Brody was exhausted, but he had swallowed only a little water and would be fine.
That evening, Jase couldn’t stop asking Cole about his daring rescue.
“I should teach you some livesaving techniques,” said Cole. “Too many people think they can just jump in the water and swim to someone who’s drowning, but that’s the worst thing you can do. The person will just climb on you and pull you under. First you should see if there’s a way to pull them in without getting in the water yourself, and only jump in as a last resort, but never without something for them to grab on to.”
“Like a broom!” said Jase. “I wonder if any of the neighbors laughed when they saw you sprinting down the street holding a broom.”
“They can laugh all they want,” said Cole. “I grabbed the first thing I saw that would help me do what I had to do to save Brody.”
“You know,” said Jase, “this reminds me of something my teacher said last Sunday—that people are ‘drowning in sin.’ Sometimes I don’t tell my friends about Jesus because I’m afraid they’ll laugh at me. But you didn’t care what anyone might think when you grabbed that broom. If you had stopped to think about that, Brody might have drowned.”
Cole smiled. “Yes, but I struggle with the same thing you do sometimes—I’m afraid my college friends will laugh if I talk to them about Jesus. Maybe I should put that broom in my dorm room to remind me that they need to be rescued too!”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
If you could save someone from drowning, would you? Telling people about Jesus and praying for them is another way to help those who are drowning in their sins. If you are not sure how to do this, ask a Christian friend or trusted adult to help you.
