The X Ray

THE X RAY

Read 2 Timothy 3:14-17.

Pablo’s mother took him to the dentist for a checkup. Pablo hopped up into the chair, leaned his head back, and opened his mouth wide. “Good,” said the dentist. “I see only one cavity. Now I’m going to X-ray your teeth.”

“But why?” Pablo asked.

“I want to know if there are any problems that I can’t see on the outside,” the dentist explained. “Now hold very still for the X ray, Pablo.”

The X ray showed that Pablo had one more cavity. So his mother made an appointment to have both cavities filled. “I don’t see why the dentist had to take that X ray,” grumbled Pablo on the way home. “Now I have to have two cavities filled instead of just one!”

“That’s true,” agreed Mom, “But it would have shown up later. By then it would have gotten much bigger and you’d have needed a big filling instead of just a little one.”

That evening Pablo told his Dad about the X ray. “X rays can be a big help,” said Dad. “In a way, they remind me of the Bible.”

“How?” asked Pablo, surprised.

“Well,” replied Dad, “when we read God’s Word, He uses it to examine us deep inside where we can’t see. The Bible helps us recognize our sin so we can ask God to forgive us. He will take away our sin and help us stay away from it.”

“Yeah,” said Pablo. “I’m glad God gave us the Bible—and dentists, too.”

TO MEMORIZE:

The word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.
