The Important Book
THE IMPORTANT BOOK
Read Revelation 21:21-27.
As Mike helped clean the garage, he heard snatches of a message his father was listening to on the radio. It was about the “Book of Life.” The minister said that only people whose names were written in that book would be allowed in heaven. Mike wanted to be sure his name was there, so he decided he’d be very good.
When Mike started to tease his sister, Jordan, later that day, he thought about that “Book of Life,” so he gave Jordan a ride on his bike instead. He also took out the garbage without being asked.
Mike showed his Sunday school teacher a list of the good things he had done. “Will God write my name in His book now?” he asked.
“Let me ask you something,” Mrs. Lewis said. “Should I write down your name as a winner in our Bible reading contest because you have done all these good things?”
Mike shook his head. “I didn’t read enough chapters yet,” he said.
“Right,” said Mrs. Lewis. “To be a winner the requirement is reading the assigned chapters, not being good. In the same way, you must meet God’s requirement to get your name in His book. He requires that you trust Jesus to be your Savior. God knew that no one could do enough good things to go to heaven,” explained Mrs. Lewis.
As they talked about it, Mike realized that he needed Jesus to take his sins away. Mike bowed his head and told God how sorry he was for his sins, and he asked Jesus to come into his life. Then he smiled, for he could almost see Jesus writing his name in a big book in heaven: “Mike Roberts.”
