THE GUIDING HAND
Read Psalm 31:1-5.
Nine-year-old Marco watched as his father guided the aluminum fishing boat across the lake. The wind was strong, and the waves were high! Dad had to fight to keep the small boat on course.
Marco asked, “Can I steer for a while?”
“I’m afraid you can’t handle it alone,” Dad said, raising his voice above the motor sound.
Marco still wanted to guide the boat across the lake to the spot where he and his father were to spend the day fishing. “When you see I’m not doing it right, you can help me.”
Carefully Marco and his dad changed places in the boat, and Marco began to guide it across the rough waters. Suddenly a big wave stood before them, and Marco turned the boat with a jerk. The boat began to zigzag back and forth until Dad came to the rescue. Placing his hand over Marco’s, he guided the boat until things were once again under control.
“Boy,” Marco said with relief in his voice. “It’s a good thing you were there to take over.”
His father smiled. “This is a good example of our Christian life. We sometimes think we can handle our problems by ourselves, and God lets us try. Then just about the time when things seem to be completely out of hand, God puts His hand over ours and guides us through the situation.”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
When things seem to be going well, do you forget that you need God? Do you think you can handle that math test alone? That you don’t need help with your paper route? When you try to get along without God’s help, sooner or later you’ll run into trouble. God wants to help. Let Him!
